Zimbabwe has intensified efforts to reform and strengthen its healthcare system following the official opening of the High-Level Validation Workshop for the National Health Strategy (NHS) 2026–2030.
Addressing stakeholders at the workshop, Health and Child Care Minister Douglas Mombeshora described the strategy as a “national statement of intent” designed to transform the country’s health sector through stronger domestic financing, improved accountability, and wider access to quality healthcare services.
The five-year blueprint seeks to modernise Zimbabwe’s healthcare delivery system through increased investment in health infrastructure, procurement of modern medical equipment, and expansion of digital health technologies. The strategy also places strong emphasis on addressing critical workforce shortages and reducing inequalities in healthcare access, particularly in underserved rural communities.
Dr Mombeshora said the country has already recorded notable gains in the health sector, including improvements in life expectancy, reductions in maternal mortality, and sustained progress toward HIV treatment targets. Despite these achievements, he acknowledged that Zimbabwe continues to face major challenges, including limited funding, shortages of medicines and equipment, and disparities in service delivery across regions.
The validation workshop brought together senior government officials, health experts, development partners, and civil society representatives to review and consolidate the strategy ahead of its nationwide implementation.
The NHS 2026–2030 is expected to serve as a key roadmap guiding Zimbabwe’s healthcare priorities and long-term efforts to build a more resilient, inclusive, and efficient health system.
