42-Year-Old Gwanda Woman Nabbed for Drug Possession

A 42-year-old woman from Magedleni Village in Gwanda, Debra Nyathi, has been sentenced to 210 hours of community service for unlawful possession of contraband.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPA), Nyathi was intercepted on 12 February 2025 by the National Anti-Smuggling Unit while traveling on a bus from South Africa along the Beitbridge-Bulawayo road. During a routine search, two sacks containing 599 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup were discovered. Nyathi admitted ownership of the contraband and was arrested.

The recovered drugs were sent to Gwanda Hospital for analysis, where a Pharmacist Affidavit was issued. Nyathi was initially sentenced to 12 months in prison, with 6 months suspended on condition of completing the community service at Magedleni Primary School. The seized cough syrup was forfeited to the state for destruction.
