ZIMParks Debunks Cyanide Poisoning Claims at Lake Chivero
Written by Staff Reporter on December 27, 2024
Lake Chivero’s recent wildlife and fish deaths sparked concerns, with social media speculating cyanide poisoning. However, Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMParks) investigations, assisted by the University of Zimbabwe and Veterinary Unit, revealed cyanobacteria as the actual cause.
Cyanobacteria, a toxic algae, thrives in polluted water, pointing to Lake Chivero’s contamination issues. Raw sewage runoff from Harare’s Marimba area and malfunctioning treatment plants contribute to the pollution. This hazardous environment harms aquatic life and poses health risks to humans.
ZIMParks urges reliance on official updates, dismissing online misinformation. Collaborating with stakeholders, they aim to resolve Lake Chivero’s issues and prevent similar tragedies. Measures include, addressing sewage problem, implementing sustainable waste management, ehancing environmental policies and raising public awareness
ZIMParks reaffirms commitment to preserving Zimbabwe’s natural heritage.
