Zimbabwe Rolls Out Twice-Yearly HIV Prevention Injection

Written by on January 14, 2026

Zimbabwe has taken a major step forward in the fight against HIV with the launch of Lenacapavir, a long-acting prevention injection given just twice a year.

The rollout begins this month in 12 high-priority districts and urban centres, including Harare, Bulawayo, and Gweru, targeting communities most affected by new HIV infections.

About 46,500 people are expected to benefit in the first phase, with priority given to adolescent girls and young women, sex workers, and pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Health officials say Lenacapavir is a game-changer, offering six months of protection per dose and reducing the burden of taking daily pills.

The move places Zimbabwe among the first countries in the world to adopt the next-generation HIV prevention injection, strengthening efforts to curb new infections and move closer to epidemic control.
