Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe – Following the successful conclusion of the Zambia-Zimbabwe Bi-National Commission (BNC), the two nations have reaffirmed their commitment to a joint vision of developing the Victoria Falls region into a world-class hub for sustainable tourism, cross-border trade, and regional integration.
At a high-level bilateral meeting focused on cross-border facilitation, senior officials from both countries outlined a concrete action plan to realize the strategic directives of Presidents Emmerson Mnangagwa and Hakainde Hichilema.
A key milestone from this collaboration is the decision to implement 24-hour operations at the Victoria Falls Border Post. Honourable Tongai Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Tourism and Hospitality, stressed the importance of actionable timelines. “The urgency of setting clear and achievable timelines cannot be overstated,” he said. “Only through coordinated action can we unlock the full benefits of growing visitor arrivals and strengthened economic ties.”
Honourable Rodney Sikumba, Zambia’s Minister of Tourism, described the measure as “transformative,” stating it will “ease congestion, improve traveler convenience, and enhance trade efficiency.”
The World Bank endorsed the collaborative effort, with Mr. Nathan Belete, Division Director for Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, highlighting the significant economic upside. He pointed to the recent rebound in tourism—2.2 million international arrivals in Zambia and 1.6 million in Zimbabwe—and a bilateral trade volume of USD 460 million as a strong foundation for future growth.
“Tourism is a powerful catalyst for job creation and inclusive development, especially for women and youth around Victoria Falls,” Mr. Belete stated, advocating for harmonized visa regimes and infrastructure improvements.
This partnership stands as a model of regional cooperation, grounded in shared values of sustainability, cultural pride, and economic resilience. The joint vision aims to create an enriching, seamless experience for visitors while ensuring lasting socio-economic benefits for the communities surrounding the majestic Victoria Falls.
