VICTORIA FALLS, Zimbabwe – In a significant coup for the nation’s tourism strategy, the breathtaking backdrop of Victoria Falls will host the Africa Footgolf Championship from November 23-25, 2025, showcasing how sport is becoming a powerful driver for travel and economic growth in Zimbabwe.
The prestigious continental championship, to be held at the scenic Elephant Hills Golf Course, is more than just a sporting contest; it is a deliberate and high-profile exercise in sports tourism. The event will see national teams from across Africa and Europe, including Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, Morocco, Germany, and Slovenia, compete not only for the African title but also for a coveted spot at the Footgolf World Cup in Mexico.
The Zimbabwean government is placing a major emphasis on the event, with the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry and the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) spearheading the initiative. The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Honourable Tongai Mnangagwa, is scheduled to officially open the championship, underscoring the event’s national importance.
Daniel Kuwengwa, President of the Zimbabwe Footgolf Association (ZFGA), expressed immense pride in securing the event for the country. “Hosting a championship of this magnitude is a testament to Zimbabwe’s capabilities and its appeal as a world-class destination,” Kuwengwa stated. “This is not just about footgolf; it’s about putting Zimbabwe on the global map, inviting international visitors, and allowing them to ‘Experience Zimbabwe’ in a unique and exciting way.”
The event promises to cast an international spotlight on Victoria Falls, already a premier tourist draw, and demonstrate its versatility as a host for niche sporting events. This aligns perfectly with the government’s strategy to position the resort city as a year-round, multi-faceted destination.
Despite initial financial hurdles, the timely intervention of sponsors has ensured the event will proceed, highlighting the growing private sector confidence in sports tourism as a viable investment.
Zimbabwe will field a strong 25-member team, featuring top athletes like Senator Kambizi, Tadiwanashe Kambizi, and Beauty Mashonganyika, who will have the honour of competing on home soil.
As the first Footgolf kicks off at Elephant Hills, the championship is poised to be a win not just for the athletes, but for the entire Zimbabwean tourism ecosystem, proving that the fusion of sport and travel is a powerful recipe for national promotion and economic development.
