VICTORIA FALLS, ZIMBABWE – Zimbabwe’s ambition to become a major Sports Tourism destination has taken a significant step forward with the hosting of the inaugural Africa FootGolf Open Championship Tournament 2025 at the Elephant Hills Golf Resort. The event, which draws international players from countries including Germany, Slovenia, Morocco, South Africa, Zambia, and Angola, is being hailed as a powerful driver for both local economies and the promotion of the nation’s “Vision 2030” philosophy of “leaving no one and no place behind.”
The tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for the FootGolf World Cup in Mexico, provides a high-profile platform for blending sports with Zimbabwe’s rich tourism offerings. Deputy Minister of Tourism, Hon. T. Mnangagwa, in his opening remarks, warmly welcomed guests, emphasizing the importance of this new sporting discipline.
”Sports Tourism remains a powerful driver of growth of local economies, rural development and youth participation,” the Minister stated. He highlighted the event’s dual purpose: fostering competition and encouraging visitors to immerse themselves in a holistic Zimbabwean experience, urging them to “proudly say ZimBho!”
While the competition takes center stage at the Elephant Hills Golf Course, visitors are strongly encouraged to explore the majestic surroundings. The host city, Victoria Falls, is home to the mighty Victoria Falls, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Deputy Minister invited guests to “experience the tour of the majestic Victoria Falls and take part in the legendary ‘flight of angels’ over the Falls, white water rafting, bungee jumping, and the unforgettable safari experiences.” This strategy demonstrates the Ministry’s commitment to showcasing Zimbabwe as a multifaceted destination, moving beyond traditional safari tourism to embrace a diverse portfolio that includes adventure sports and gastronomy tourism.
The event is seen as a key component of the country’s broader destination promotion campaign, as it exposes international visitors not just to its scenic beauty but also to its rich cultural values.
”We invite you to experience Zimbabwe through our greatest wonder, our people, whose warm hospitality is people-centered and rooted in our rich cultural values of authenticity and respect,” the Deputy Minister noted. In a nod to local experiences, guests were also invited to indulge in “unique Zimbabwean flavors” at the renowned Boma Dinner and Drum Show.
This Pan-African, continental, and global cooperation strengthens the spirit of sports and tourism, projecting a positive and vibrant image of Zimbabwe to the world. International participants are encouraged to become tourism ambassadors for Zimbabwe upon their return home, sharing their firsthand experience of the country’s true hospitality.
