Veld Fires Ravage Over 80,000 Hectares in Matabeleland North as Authorities Intensify Response

Written by on May 26, 2026

More than 80,000 hectares of land have been destroyed by veld fires in Matabeleland North this year, triggering growing concern among authorities over the devastating impact on livelihoods, grazing land, agriculture and wildlife.

Provincial officials say the destruction represents a sharp 72 percent increase from the approximately 47,000 hectares lost during the same period in 2024, highlighting an alarming escalation in fire-related damage across the province.

Authorities attributed the surge to the early outbreak of veld fires coupled with poor fire management practices, warning that unchecked blazes continue to threaten communities, ecosystems and economic activities dependent on natural resources.

Matabeleland North remains among Zimbabwe’s hardest-hit provinces during the fire season, with prolonged dry conditions and strong winds creating an environment that allows flames to spread rapidly over vast areas.

Officials said the increase in fire incidents has heightened fears over shrinking grazing land for livestock, destruction of vegetation and habitats, and broader environmental degradation that could undermine rural livelihoods.

In response, provincial authorities said efforts to contain the crisis are being intensified through the construction of fireguards, expanded community awareness campaigns and stronger enforcement measures targeting individuals responsible for illegally starting fires.

Authorities also urged communities to remain vigilant and adopt responsible land management practices, stressing that collective action will be crucial in reducing fire outbreaks and protecting lives, property and the environment.

The worsening situation has renewed calls for greater public cooperation as Zimbabwe enters another high-risk fire season, with officials warning that prevention remains the most effective defence against widespread destruction.
