US Court Dismisses US$27 Million Defamation Lawsuit Against Zimbabwean Comedian Learnmore Jonasi

A United States court has dismissed a US$27 million defamation lawsuit filed against Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Jonasi, bringing an end to a high-profile legal battle with renowned South African singer and composer Lebo M.

The lawsuit stemmed from remarks made by Jonasi during an appearance on the One54 Africa podcast, where he offered a humorous interpretation of the iconic opening Zulu chant from Disney’s The Lion King. Lebo M, who is closely associated with the celebrated soundtrack, argued that the comments were defamatory.

In a ruling welcomed by Jonasi’s legal team, the court dismissed the case, marking a significant victory for the comedian. Jonasi’s attorney, Bryan Sullivan, described the outcome as a strong affirmation of free speech and his client’s rights under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

Sullivan said the defence team will now pursue recovery of legal costs under California’s anti-SLAPP legislation, which is designed to protect individuals from lawsuits aimed at suppressing lawful public expression and participation.

Reacting to the decision, Jonasi expressed relief on social media, saying he was pleased that the matter had finally been resolved after months of legal proceedings.

The ruling closes a closely watched case that drew attention across Africa and beyond, while reinforcing legal protections for freedom of expression in the United States.
