Sanganai Expo Relocates to Mutare in Historic Shift, Eyes Major Economic Boost

MUTARE, September 4, 2025 – In a landmark move aligned with the national devolution agenda, the 18th edition of Zimbabwe’s premier tourism showcase, the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi Tourism Expo, will be held in Mutare, Manicaland, for the first time ever, the government has announced.
Dubbed Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi 2025 to include the local Manyika dialect, the expo marks a significant departure from its traditional home in Bulawayo. The event is scheduled to take place from September 9 to 13 at the Mutare Sports Club.
The Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. Barbara Rwodzi, revealed the details during a press briefing on Thursday, outlining an ambitious plan to leverage the event for sustainable tourism development across the country’s provinces.
“This is a historic moment,” Minister Rwodzi stated. “This move is in line with President Emmerson D. Mnangagwa’s vision of leaving no one and no place behind. The rebranding to include ‘Kumbanayi’ is intentional, underscoring a call for unity, participation, and cultural inclusivity.”
The Minister highlighted that the expo’s rotation across provinces will continue annually, with its name adapting to reflect the language of the host region.
Substantial Benefits for Manicaland
The relocation is expected to deliver significant economic benefits to Mutare and the wider Manicaland province. Minister Rwodzi pointed to anticipated economic spin-offs for local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, and transport services, and the creation of temporary and permanent jobs.
A key legacy of hosting the expo is the accelerated infrastructure development. Notable improvements include the refurbishment of the Grand Reef Aerodrome, with Air Zimbabwe set to resume flights to the city. The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has also reintroduced a luxurious passenger train service linking Harare and Mutare.
“These timely interventions ease access to one of Zimbabwe’s most scenic regions,” Minister Rwodzi said, applauding the Ministry of Transport. “This unlocks new opportunities for investment, hospitality, and community-based tourism, ensuring Mutare and destinations like Nyanga, Vumba, and Chimanimani gain the visibility and economic benefits they richly deserve.”
Strong International and Local Participation
The expo has already attracted strong interest from international buyers and exhibitors. To date, 409 exhibition stands have been booked across various categories, including accommodation, travel agencies, and government institutions.
Eighty-three international buyers from key markets such as Japan, China, India, the USA, and South Africa have confirmed their attendance, alongside 12 local buyers. Seven countries—Ghana, Indonesia, Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, Tanzania, and South Africa—will have a national presence, with Ghana showcasing its cuisine at a dedicated Gastronomy Hub.
A Packed Schedule of Events
Running under the theme “Devolving Sustainable Tourism Development – Our Future,” the expo will feature a wide array of activities. Key events include a Tourism Investment Conference, a vibrant street carnival on September 6, speed networking sessions for trade professionals, and a Tourism Scholastica Conference.
The event will conclude with an awards ceremony and a Save Beach Party at the iconic Birchenough Bridge.
Minister Rwodzi called on the media, tourism stakeholders, and the nation to rally behind the event. “This platform is a celebration of our heritage, culture, and the legendary warmth of our people,” she said. “Together, let us ensure this Expo reaffirms tourism as a leading sector driving our economy, creating jobs, and showcasing Zimbabwe’s unique treasures to the world.”
