Earlier today, President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially opened the SADC Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA) Summit in Harare, calling for greater inclusion of youth and women in regional conservation efforts.
The high-level event marks 25 years of cross-border cooperation in biodiversity protection, sustainable development, and ecotourism. It has been running since Monday with a series of technical and official meetings. Among the dignitaries in attendance is Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera.
In his keynote address, President Mnangagwa urged member states to adopt science-based, community-driven approaches that position young people and women at the forefront of conservation initiatives.
He also emphasized the importance of collaborative conservation models that integrate local communities, governments, researchers, and the private sector. He said the TFCA approach has proven that socio-economic development and environmental protection are complementary.
The TFCA program links national parks and protected areas across borders, allowing for joint management of shared ecosystems and wildlife corridors. The summit continues with resolutions expected to focus on law enforcement collaboration, climate resilience, and equitable benefit-sharing for rural communities.
