President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko has called for a modern, disciplined and financially sustainable Botswana Defence Force (BDF), urging military leaders to embrace innovation, professionalism and strategic foresight in response to evolving global and regional security threats.

Officially opening the 21st Botswana Defence Force Strategic Conference, President Boko described the gathering as a timely and critical platform for shaping the future of Botswana’s defence capabilities at a time of fiscal constraints and increasingly complex security challenges.

Addressing senior military leadership and distinguished delegates, the President said the rapidly shifting global security landscape — characterised by geopolitical tensions, cyber threats, terrorism, organised crime, illegal mining and other emerging risks — demands a vigilant, adaptable and highly capable defence force.

He underscored the need for the BDF to remain operationally effective while exercising prudent use of limited national resources, stressing that discipline, innovation and professionalism would be essential in safeguarding Botswana’s sovereignty and stability.

President Boko applauded the Botswana Defence Force for sustaining its reputation as a disciplined, professional and respected institution, both domestically and internationally, despite prevailing financial pressures. He paid tribute to BDF Commander General Mpho Churchill Mophuting and the force’s leadership for demonstrating resilience, dedication and steadfast command during challenging periods.

In a strong call for ethical leadership, President Boko stressed that the BDF must remain anchored on accountability, integrity and zero tolerance for corruption, misconduct and abuse of office. He unequivocally condemned Gender-Based Violence and all forms of criminal behaviour within the military, saying genuine military professionalism must be defined not only by operational competence, but by moral character and discipline.

The President also reaffirmed Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of service members, highlighting plans to enhance housing, strengthen pension systems, improve conditions of service and expand investment in technology, cyber capabilities, logistics and professional military education.

Concluding his address, President Boko challenged delegates attending the strategic conference to produce practical, measurable and forward-looking resolutions that will reinforce national security, strengthen operational readiness and secure the long-term resilience of the Botswana Defence Force.

The conference is expected to chart strategic pathways for the BDF as Botswana seeks to balance defence preparedness with economic realities while responding to an increasingly dynamic security environment.
