The government has refuted claims that it blocked Starlink from operating in the country.

Speaking during a Ministry of Information Communication Technology and Postal and Courier services Digital Economy conference, Postal & Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) Director General Dr Gift Machengete said the authority only asked Starlink to switch off those who were using the network as Starlink had not applied to operate in the country.

Dr Machengete added that Starlink has now applied an that the government is in the process of looking into their application.

Last week Starlink shut down its services in Zimbabwe following Government Order with the country’s telecoms regulator, POTRAZ, citing violations of the Postal and Telecommunications Act.

While not officially available in Zimbabwe, many residents were able to access Starlink through its regional and global roaming features.
