Police Intensify Nationwide Operation Against Public Carrying of Knives

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has intensified a nationwide crackdown on the public carrying of knives, machetes and other dangerous weapons as authorities move to contain rising incidents of violent crime and strengthen public safety across Zimbabwe.
In a statement, police said the campaign — operating under the theme “No to Knives in Pockets / Inqgamu Idingani Esikhwameni / Banga Rinodei Muhomwe” — was launched in response to growing cases of murder, attempted murder and robbery involving dangerous weapons.
According to the ZRP, violent incidents linked to knives and machetes are increasingly being recorded in bars, nightclubs, mining communities and residential areas, where minor disputes frequently escalate into serious assaults and fatal confrontations.
Police revealed that 15 suspects were arrested on May 18, bringing the total number of arrests to 346 since the operation commenced on May 9, 2026, highlighting the scale of ongoing enforcement efforts.
Authorities said the operation is designed to proactively prevent violent crime by removing dangerous weapons from public spaces while discouraging individuals from carrying objects commonly used to commit offences.
The police have called on members of the public to cooperate during stop-and-search exercises and assist law enforcement agencies by reporting individuals carrying knives, machetes or other dangerous weapons to the National Complaints Desk or nearest police station.
The intensified operation forms part of broader efforts by the ZRP to curb violent crime, restore public confidence in community safety and create a more secure environment amid increasing concern over weapon-related violence across the country.
