The late Brigadier-General (Retired) Elasto Madzingira, a national hero, will be laid to rest at the National Heroes Acre in Harare on Wednesday. Madzingira, who passed away at his Greendale home at the age of 65 after a short illness, will be honored with a state-led burial ceremony presided over by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Madzingira’s family spokesperson, Wing Commander (Rtd) Wilmore Madzingira, expressed gratitude for the national hero status conferred upon their beloved family member.
The late was born on August 4, 1959, in Chivi District. He and two of his siblings abandoned their university studies to join the liberation struggle in 1978, showcasing remarkable political awareness and commitment at a young age.
Madzingira’s distinguished military career included serving in the ZANLA forces, receiving training in Mozambique, and later joining the Air Force of Zimbabwe, where he rose through the ranks to become the Director of Finance before his retirement in 1992 due to injuries sustained while on duty.
He is survived by his wife and six children.
