Government Strengthens Reintegration Programme as Nearly 100,000 Zimbabweans Return from South Africa

The Government has intensified support for Zimbabweans returning from South Africa, with nearly 100,000 citizens processed through Beitbridge Border Post since late May, prompting the expansion of a coordinated national reintegration programme.

Speaking during the post-Cabinet media briefing on Tuesday, Minister of Local Government and Public Works Daniel Garwe said a total of 99,418 Zimbabweans were processed through the border post between 28 May and 10 July 2026.

Minister Garwe noted that women and children accounted for more than 70 percent of the returnees, highlighting the importance of comprehensive humanitarian and social support services to assist vulnerable groups.

To address the growing needs of returning citizens, Government has strengthened humanitarian assistance through the provision of food, clothing and other essential supplies. The support has been complemented by donations from First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, aimed at easing the transition of returnees as they reintegrate into their communities.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care, working in partnership with development agencies and humanitarian organisations, continues to provide critical health services at the border, including medical care, child nutrition screening and other interventions designed to safeguard the wellbeing of returnees.

Government said the reintegration programme remains a key priority, with stakeholders working to ensure returning citizens receive the support needed to rebuild their lives and access essential services.

Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining orderly migration and border security, with security agencies continuing surveillance and enforcement measures to curb illegal border crossings.

The intensified response reflects Government’s commitment to protecting citizens, providing humanitarian assistance and ensuring that Zimbabweans returning home are supported through a structured and dignified reintegration process.
