CCZ Calls for Urgent Food Safety Action

Written by on June 9, 2026

The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) has called for urgent and coordinated action to strengthen food safety systems and protect consumers from preventable health risks.

Speaking during the commemoration of World Food Safety Day 2026, held under the theme “From Burden to Solutions – Safe Food Everywhere,” recently, CCZ CEO Rosemary Mpofu stated that safe nutritious and properly handled food must be accessible to all Zimbabweans.

CCZ said food safety is a shared responsibility involving government agencies, regulators, local authorities, producers, retailers and consumers.

The organisation raised concern over continued reports of expired products on shelves, poor storage conditions, unhygienic food handling practices and misleading product labelling, warning that these issues remain a threat to public health.

The council urged stakeholders to strengthen inspections and enforcement, improve laboratory testing and surveillance systems, and intensify consumer education programmes to ensure safer food for all.
