A 49-year-old Beitbridge man, Denny Mutariswa, has been sentenced to an effective 10 months in prison after being convicted of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs for dealing purposes.

Mutariswa was apprehended on May 15, 2025, around 1:00 AM, during an anti-smuggling operation conducted by police officers at a roadblock along the Masvingo/Beitbridge highway. Officers stopped a Scania truck towing two trailers for a search.

During the search of the first trailer, where Mutariswa had hitched a ride, authorities discovered one wrapped parcel containing loose dagga (marijuana) hidden within a 50kg bag of maize.

Mutariswa was immediately arrested. The recovered dagga weighed 2.55kg and was valued at approximately USD 200. He failed to produce a license or permit for dealing in drugs.

He was subsequently convicted and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, with 2 months suspended for 5 years on condition of good behavior, meaning he will serve 10 months behind bars.
