The Mosi-oa-Tunya Development Company has officially commissioned its new offices at  Jafuta Estate in Victoria Falls, marking a new chapter in the company’s efforts to drive tourism infrastructure development and investment.

The ceremony, was attended by the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Hon. Barbara Rwodzi, who was the guest of honour, alongside MOTDC, board members, government representatives and business leaders.

The new facilities are expected to strengthen the company’s operations, improve engagement with stakeholders, attract investment and support the delivery of key tourism infrastructure projects.

The commissioning comes as the government pushes to diversify Zimbabwe’s tourism offering, with sports tourism emerging as a key driver of visitor spending and local economic activity.

Minister Rwodzi said sporting events create opportunities for businesses beyond the playing field, particularly in accommodation, food and beverage services.

“Teams can be playing together, but the people who come to watch these games are the ones who constitute sports tourism,” she said.

She pointed to Victoria Falls’ growing potential as a sports tourism destination, supported by the development of a new cricket stadium. Bringing more sporting events to the resort city, she said, would help raise its profile among both domestic and international visitors.

The government is also pursuing tourism development beyond traditional centres, with initiatives extending to areas such as Kariba, Manicaland, Great Zimbabwe and Tugwi-Mukosi.

The Ministry also pledged to work with Zimbabwe Cricket to support upcoming sporting events, including domestic cricket matches scheduled for November 20, with the aim of creating memorable experiences for visitors.

Beyond infrastructure and sporting events, Minister Rwodzi highlighted the need to protect Zimbabwe’s natural heritage, warning that conservation must remain central to the country’s tourism ambitions.

She commended private-sector conservancies for their conservation efforts and emphasised the importance of continued cooperation between government and businesses in protecting wildlife and natural ecosystems.

Such partnerships are particularly important as droughts, floods and other environmental pressures threaten the country’s natural resources.

With its new offices now commissioned, the Mosi-oa-Tunya Development Company is positioning itself to play a greater role in tourism infrastructure development, investment mobilisation and the expansion of tourism opportunities in Victoria Falls and other parts of Zimbabwe.

The challenge now is to translate the new facilities and growing interest in sports tourism into tangible benefits for local businesses, communities and the wider economy.
