MASVINGO TAKES OFF: THREE FLIGHTS IN ONE DAY SIGNAL TOURISM BOOM

MASVINGO — The sound of aircraft landing at Masvingo Airport is becoming a sound of opportunity, as the province recorded its third commercial flight of the day in what tourism authorities are describing as a significant boost to regional connectivity and economic activity.

Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Hon. Barbara Rwodzi personally welcomed passengers arriving on the third flight, highlighting the development as evidence that Government’s efforts to decentralise economic growth are beginning to take shape.

For Masvingo, the development carries significance far beyond the airport.

Better air connectivity means tourists, business travellers and conference delegates can reach the province faster — giving them more time to explore, spend and experience what the destination has to offer.

Masvingo is home to some of Zimbabwe’s most important tourism assets, including the iconic Great Zimbabwe Monument, Lake Mutirikwi and a growing number of emerging leisure destinations.

Increased flight connectivity could help unlock the economic potential of these attractions by making the province more accessible to domestic and international visitors.

The aviation developments are being complemented by major infrastructure projects across the country.

Contractors have returned to complete sections of the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls highway, ahead of the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, while work continues along the strategic Harare–Chirundu corridor.

The combined investment in roads and aviation is expected to make movement between Zimbabwe’s tourism destinations easier and more efficient.

Government’s tourism strategy under National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) is increasingly focused on attracting visitors who stay longer and spend more.

One of the priority areas is MICE tourism — Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions — a sector known for generating high visitor spending.

International source markets remain important, with the United States among the leading sources of arrivals, alongside the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.

Australian visitors are also highlighted as a particularly valuable market because of their strong per-capita spending across hospitality and tourism services.

For Masvingo, the challenge now is to turn increased accessibility into increased visitor spending.

The Ministry is also looking at ways of turning sporting and cultural events into multi-day tourism experiences.

Under a proposed five-year strategy, major fixtures involving teams such as Dynamos and Masvingo United could become more than just match-day events.

A football fan travelling to Masvingo could arrive a day earlier, stay overnight, enjoy local cuisine, visit Great Zimbabwe or Lake Mutirikwi, and explore emerging destinations such as Sare Beach before returning home.

That means more business for hotels, restaurants, transport operators, tour guides, retailers and informal traders.

One extra night can create several economic opportunities.

For communities, the real measure of tourism growth is not simply the number of aircraft landing at an airport.

It is whether those arrivals create jobs, markets and new opportunities.

A full hotel needs more workers.
A busy restaurant needs more supplies.
A growing tourism destination needs guides and transport operators.
And increased visitor spending creates opportunities for small businesses.

That is the human story behind the flights arriving at Masvingo Airport.

Minister Rwodzi commended President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership, saying expanded aviation capacity and infrastructure development are aligned with the country’s Vision 2030 ambitions.

For Masvingo, the third flight of the day may therefore be remembered as more than another arrival.

It could be a glimpse of a province preparing for take-off.
