President Mnangagwa Hosts King Misuzulu, Discusses Role of Traditional Leadership in Africa’s Development

President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday welcomed South African King Misuzulu kaZwelithini and his delegation to State House in Harare, where discussions focused on the role of traditional leadership in addressing challenges inherited from colonialism and apartheid and advancing Africa’s development agenda.

The high-level engagement underscored the growing recognition of traditional institutions as key partners in promoting social cohesion, cultural identity and sustainable solutions to contemporary challenges facing African societies.

Speaking after the meeting, ZANU PF spokesperson Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa said the delegation, which included King Ndamase of the Amapondo Kingdom, had specifically requested an audience with President Mnangagwa in acknowledgement of his stature as a regional statesman and liberation war veteran.

Cde Mutsvangwa said the traditional leaders sought to exchange views with President Mnangagwa on the contribution that indigenous leadership structures can make towards confronting the enduring social, economic and political effects of colonialism and apartheid.

He noted that the kings regard traditional institutions as important custodians of African values and heritage, with a critical role to play in fostering unity, preserving cultural identity and supporting national development efforts across the continent.

Describing the engagement as fruitful and successful, Cde Mutsvangwa said discussions centred on how historical and traditional governance systems could complement modern state institutions in addressing challenges inherited from the colonial and apartheid eras while promoting peace, stability and inclusive development.

The meeting reflects continued efforts to strengthen collaboration between political and traditional leadership in shaping Africa’s future and advancing solutions rooted in the continent’s history, culture and shared aspirations.
