Tagwirei Commits US$1 Million to Assist Zimbabweans Returning from South Africa

Prominent businessman and philanthropist Dr Kudakwashe Tagwirei, through the Bridging Gaps Foundation, has pledged US$1 million towards the repatriation of Zimbabweans seeking to return home amid rising anti-migrant tensions in South Africa.
The contribution is expected to provide critical support for transport and logistical arrangements for an estimated 20,000 Zimbabweans wishing to return to the country, in what authorities have described as a significant boost to ongoing humanitarian and Government-led interventions.
According to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, the repatriation exercise will be coordinated through the Department of Civil Protection (DCP) and managed via the Beitbridge Border Post, Zimbabwe’s busiest gateway linking the country to South Africa.
In a letter dated June 26, 2026, the ministry instructed relevant officials to urgently finalise bus procurement processes and operational modalities to ensure the smooth implementation of the programme. Authorities described the donation as a timely and strategic intervention that strengthens national efforts to support citizens affected by the unrest.
The initiative comes at a time when Government, humanitarian agencies and private-sector partners are intensifying efforts to facilitate the safe return, reception and reintegration of Zimbabweans displaced or affected by escalating anti-migrant sentiments in parts of South Africa.
Officials say the collaborative response underscores a shared commitment to protecting the welfare of Zimbabwean nationals abroad while ensuring those opting to return home are assisted with dignity, safety and adequate support.
