Gold Sector Positioned for Sustained Growth Amid Calls for Operational Reforms

Zimbabwe’s gold mining industry is poised for continued expansion, buoyed by strong international gold prices and ongoing investment in production capacity, despite facing a number of operational and financial challenges.
Industry leaders say the sector remains one of the country’s key economic drivers, with significant potential to increase output, attract investment and enhance its contribution to national development.
Addressing delegates at the recent Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe conference, Qubeka Nkomo expressed confidence in the long-term outlook of the gold industry, citing favourable market conditions and a pipeline of expansion projects across the country.
However, he highlighted several constraints that continue to hinder growth and delay the implementation of critical investments. These include prolonged payment delays for the surrender portion of export proceeds, shortages of foreign currency and limited access to affordable capital for mine development and plant expansion.
Nkomo also pointed to rising operational costs, particularly high electricity tariffs, expensive financing and a range of fiscal charges, which are placing additional pressure on producers and affecting the sector’s competitiveness.
He said addressing these challenges through policy and regulatory reforms would unlock greater investment, accelerate expansion projects and position the industry for higher production levels.
Industry stakeholders believe that creating a more predictable and competitive operating environment will be key to attracting fresh capital, strengthening investor confidence and enabling the gold sector to fully realise its potential as a major contributor to Zimbabwe’s economic growth, export earnings and employment creation.
With global gold prices remaining firm and demand for the precious metal continuing to rise, the sector is widely regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s strongest opportunities for driving sustainable growth and increasing foreign currency generation in the years ahead.
