Italy Investigates Suspected Ebola Cases as Uganda Outbreak Intensifies

Italian health authorities are investigating two suspected Ebola cases in the northern city of Milan after two aid workers recently returned from humanitarian assignments in Uganda, raising renewed concerns over the cross-border spread of the deadly virus.
According to Italian media reports, the man and woman — both from the city of Como — began displaying symptoms commonly associated with Ebola shortly after returning from Uganda, where they had spent approximately three months undertaking humanitarian work.
The reported symptoms include high fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and nausea, with local reports indicating that the male patient developed severe intestinal complications, while the woman reportedly exhibited neurological symptoms, prompting urgent medical attention and heightened surveillance by health officials.
The suspected infections have triggered fresh public health concerns in Europe as authorities closely monitor developments linked to the outbreak in East Africa.
Meanwhile, Uganda has confirmed additional Ebola infections, pushing the country’s total number of recorded cases to seven as health officials intensify containment efforts amid fears of further transmission.
The growing outbreak has placed regional and international health systems on high alert, with concerns particularly centred on infections in densely populated urban areas and exposure among frontline healthcare workers.
The World Health Organization has previously warned of the risks posed by Ebola outbreaks spreading beyond initial hotspots, particularly in regions with frequent population movement and strained health infrastructure.
Despite mounting concerns, public health authorities maintain that the immediate risk of widespread global transmission remains relatively low, although vigilance, rapid detection and strict containment measures remain critical in preventing further escalation.
Italian authorities are expected to release further updates as medical investigations and laboratory testing continue to determine whether the Milan cases are linked to the ongoing Ebola outbreak in Uganda.
