Zimbabwe is strengthening its position as a key regional gateway through sustained investments in transport infrastructure, ICT and meteorological services aimed at deepening connectivity, trade and economic integration within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Speaking at the official opening of the SADC Cluster Meeting in Bulawayo on Thursday, Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Judith Ncube, said transport, Information Communication Technology (ICT) and meteorology remain critical pillars for driving regional trade, investment, resilience and sustainable development.

She said the three sectors are indispensable enablers of economic growth and cooperation, playing a vital role in strengthening regional connectivity and supporting the SADC integration agenda.

“The transport sector remains a cornerstone of regional integration, serving as the physical and economic bridge that connects people, markets and industries across the SADC region,” said Minister Ncube.

Highlighting Zimbabwe’s commitment to improving regional transport networks, she pointed to major infrastructure projects that are transforming the movement of goods and people across borders. These include the upgrading of the Beitbridge–Harare Road Corridor and the modernisation of the Beitbridge Border Post, both of which have significantly enhanced trade efficiency and reduced transit delays.

Minister Ncube said the Government is also advancing upgrades at the Chirundu and Forbes border posts as part of broader efforts to facilitate seamless cross-border movement and unlock new trade and investment opportunities.

She noted that modern, efficient transport systems, supported by robust ICT infrastructure and reliable meteorological services, are essential for boosting competitiveness, strengthening regional value chains and building resilience against emerging economic and environmental challenges.

The SADC Cluster Meeting brings together regional stakeholders to assess progress, strengthen collaboration and chart strategies for accelerating integration, connectivity and sustainable development across Southern Africa.

Zimbabwe’s ongoing infrastructure modernisation programme underscores its commitment to supporting regional economic transformation and positioning itself as a strategic hub for trade, investment and mobility within the SADC region.
