His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa this morning presided over the burial of late National Hero Brigadier General (Retired) Donald Silundi Tshuma at the National Heroes Acre, as the nation paid its final respects to a decorated liberation war veteran and distinguished military officer whose life was defined by sacrifice, patriotism and unwavering service to Zimbabwe.
Brigadier General (Rtd) Donald Silundi Tshuma, whose liberation war nom de guerre was Cde Henry Silundi, leaves behind a towering legacy rooted in the country’s liberation struggle and decades of exemplary service in the defence forces.
Born on 12 July 1955 at Mpilo Hospital in Bulawayo, Brig Gen (Rtd) Tshuma hailed from Siganda Inkosikazi Village in Nkayi District under Chief Sikhobokhobo in Matabeleland North Province. An only child, he began his early education at Sikhobokhobo Primary School in 1963 but, like many black Zimbabweans under colonial rule, was unable to further his education due to systemic barriers within the discriminatory colonial education system.
Driven by a deep awareness of colonial injustices and inspired by the liberation cause, Cde Tshuma joined active nationalist politics at a young age. His determination, courage and charisma in mobilising resistance among African youths soon attracted the attention of the Rhodesian Special Branch.
Recognised for his organisational abilities within nationalist circles, he was appointed ZAPU Youth League District Organising Secretary for Gwabalanda, a role in which he mobilised and facilitated the movement of young Zimbabweans into Zambia to join the armed liberation struggle.
In November 1976, he crossed into Botswana before briefly staying in Francistown and later proceeding to Zambia to formally join the liberation war as a ZIPRA cadre. He initially underwent orientation at Nampundwe Transit Camp before receiving military training at Mwembeshi Camp. Upon completion of training, he was deployed to the Northern Front along the Zambezi River under Section Commander Comrade “Curtain,” where he participated in the armed struggle against colonial rule.
Following Zimbabwe’s Independence, Brig Gen (Rtd) Tshuma was attested into the Zimbabwe National Army as a Private on 28 July 1981 and posted to 19 Infantry Battalion in Ntabazinduna, Bulawayo. His professionalism, discipline and leadership qualities quickly distinguished him, earning him steady promotions through the military ranks.
In 1982, he was promoted to Captain and deployed to 16 Infantry Battalion. His distinguished military career continued to rise, culminating in promotion to Major in 1992, commissioning as Lieutenant Colonel in 2012 and elevation to Colonel in 2019.
Upon his retirement from active military service in 2020, he was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General in recognition of his long, distinguished and exemplary contribution to the nation and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
Throughout his illustrious military career, Brig Gen (Rtd) Tshuma held several strategic appointments, consistently demonstrating exceptional leadership and professionalism that earned him nomination for a peacekeeping mission in South Sudan. He also successfully completed numerous military training programmes and received several honours and medals in recognition of his dedication, sacrifice and meritorious service.
As the nation bids farewell, Brigadier General (Rtd) Donald Silundi Tshuma is being remembered not only as a decorated soldier and liberation war cadre, but as a steadfast patriot whose commitment to Zimbabwe’s sovereignty and national development remained unwavering throughout his lifetime.
