NATPHARM Addresses Paracetamol Supply Concerns
Written by Staff Reporter on May 8, 2026
The National Pharmaceutical Company of Zimbabwe (NATPHARM) has dismissed social media claims alleging widespread shortages of paracetamol in public health institutions, saying the reports are based on misunderstandings of how medicines are classified and supplied within the public health system.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) via the Parliament of Zimbabwe account, NATPHARM said not all medicines used in hospitals and clinics are classified as essential medicines, a distinction that guides procurement and distribution priorities across the country.
The organisation clarified that paracetamol is not listed under the essential medicines category, contrary to claims circulating online. It said this classification influences how medicines are stocked and distributed within public health facilities.
NATPHARM further noted that medicine availability is determined by national health policies, disease burden, available resources, and clinical priorities. It urged the public to rely on verified information when discussing pharmaceutical supply matters to avoid misinformation and public concern.
The company emphasised the need for greater public understanding of the national medicine supply system, particularly how procurement decisions are made.
